I’m Martijn Smit, assistant professor of economic geography at Utrecht University.

This homepage contains details of my current projects on this page, with downloadable versions of working papers and articles, or links to them; other overviews can be found at RePEc, Google Scholar, and Orcid. A brief overview of my teaching activities is also available.

RSAI Newsletter 2021-1, front page

I’ve been a Fellow of the Regional Studies Association since 2015, and am an ex officio member of the council of the Regional Science Assocation International as co-editor of the RSAI newsletters. I represent the Dutch Regional Science Assocation in the council of the European Regional Science Assocation, and I am the treasurer of the Dutch section.

Co-working spaces in Utrecht (gathered by a team of honours students, 2021)

A few years ago, I was happy to be involved in the European projects ‘Spard’, which ran until early 2013, and ‘I-C-EU’, which finished in late 2014. I’m currently involved in a COST action on co-working spaces – a fascinating way to encourage knowledge spillovers outside of the traditional office environment… I’m always on the lookout for new projects; in particular, I’m open to join a consortium under Horizon Europe, or under an Interreg programme.

SCImago Journal & Country Rank

As a reviewer, I’m active for Regional Studies, Papers in Regional Science, Letters in Spatial and Resource Sciences, TESG, Environment and Planning B, Spatial Economic Analysis, and many other journals. I am member of the editorial board of TESG, or, in full, the Tijdschrift voor Economische en Sociale Geografie, where I am also responsible for the book reviews. If you have an interesting, recent book in human geography (urban, rural, social, economic, political, etc.), feel free to contact me. I particularly appreciate critical reviews as well as reviews comparing books.
